Note to Portia after we split

Hey,

There’s something I would like to say about the stuff that I bought for your place while we were together.

I get that you don’t really care about stuff — the post-consumerist thing we share, and I like that about you. It strikes me that me buying a bunch of things for yours maybe made you uncomfortable. It probably would have done the same to me.

Reflecting on it, there were a bunch of reasons for the purchases. Surprising you when you got back from VA. Maybe wanting to create a sense of shared space and a future together, imagining we would enjoy those things together.

In any case, I get that I went overboard and it was a mistake. I shouldn’t have tried to sweep you off your feet or impress you with that sort of thing. I know you can’t be bought, and I’m sorry it came across that I thought you could.
